Day 3 and 4 Kebnekaise to Singi stugorna

We started Day 3 in good spirit. Had dinner in the Kebnekaise station the night before (meatballs), took a shower and were ready to go, beautiful weather. But the legs had a day off. After just a an hour we had to pass the “skree” (stonefall) of Kebnekaise’s south slope. Walking it is a challenge in itself, let alone with a 20kg backpack.

We took a break and then went on, up a hill, expecting to get a view of the Tjaktja river valley. But on top of the hill we only saw the next hill, and another, and another, and another. False hilltops are a known feature of this route. But, after 6 hills or so we got our wonderful view. We found a nice flat grassy spot next to a stream and decided to camp there, about 3 km from Singi, as the legs thought it was enough. Plus we had a fantastic view.

Day 4 we took it easy first, studying the flowers, saw reindeer and birds. But then at 11:00, just before we wanted to pack and hike towards #sälkafjällstuga, funny clouds appeared at the horizon. Now we hiked a lot and know how to recognize changing weather. We packed as quick as we could and started making our way to the Singi hut. We thought an hour would do, but it became 2 hours and we got caught up in a downpour of epic proportions with hail that was bouncing off the huts roof. So we jogged the last 200m, crashed into the hut and as the warden told us the weather would stay bad we decided to stay for the night.

Noawadays you need to pre-book those huts, but not so in 1983. Plus, as i was a member of #stf they would always allow you in, no matter how busy.
